Men at Work: Men on the Side of the Road, South Africa 

Training courses and job placements have improved the quality of life for roadside laborers. It’s a familiar sight in South Africa: hundreds of men standing alongside the road, waiting to be hired for work. An estimated 100,000 people per day can be found seeking work this way. With unemployment (no jobs) at 45%, their wait is often in vain (useless).

                “Men on the Side of the Road” is an organizational project that works to improve the job possibility and quality of life of the “roadside” workers. A registration system looks at the skills of individuals as they wait for work. Training courses and jobs are offered to help them improve their skills. The project started a tool-lending scheme to enable the unemployed to set themselves up in various businesses.

Some 50,000 new and re-cycled tools had been donated in response to a public campaign. Tools received in poor condition were repaired by the unemployed men themselves. Those men who remain without work are encouraged to improve conditions at their waiting sites by building roadside toilets, shelters, and wells. The achievements of the project have been recognized by the United Nations, which awarded “Men on the Side of the Road” a special prize.

KILLER WHALES

These mammals are absolutely beautiful. They have a very distinctive black-and-white colouration. Over 600 killer whales live along British Columbia’s coastline. They make up some of the most complex communities we have seen in mammals. They always travel in groups called pods. There are between five and thirty animals in each pod. The whales live and travel with their mothers even after they are fully-grown, forming strongly matriarchal whale societies. Over its lifetime, the group will never separate and a female will always act as the leader of the group. Killer whales are very successful hunters due to their cooperative hunting, where all animals within the pod participate.

Female killer whales usually give birth every three to ten years. Killer whales have no natural predators (they are the top predators of the oceans) and can live for about fifty to eighty years. They are not considered endangered.

AUBERGINE MOUSSAKA

 

Ingredients: 600 grams aubergines 300 grams minced meat half a minced onion parsley a little tomato puree breadcrumbs olive oil or butter for frying

Sauce: 3 tablespoons butter or margarine 3-4 tablespoons flour 2 cups milk 1 egg salt and pepper 1 tablespoon grated cheese

 

Method:
Slice the aubergines, sprinkle them with salt, and leave them to dry.  Fry them in butter or olive oil.  Fry 300 grams minced meat in butter or oil, with half minced onion, parsley and a little tomato puree. Grease a baking dish and coat it with breadcrumbs.  Put in it a layer of aubergines, then the minced meat.  Add the remaining aubergines and cover with the thick sauce (recipe below).  To the sauce add a few breadcrumbs and a little melted butter.  Brown in the oven.

 

Sauce:

Melt the butter.  Add the flour little by little and stir until dissolved.  Remove the pan from the stove, add the milk and stir till all the flour dissolves and it is cooked thoroughly.  Stir the sauce continuously until it becomes like custard; add cheese and egg.

I wanted to drive around in cool cars, wear sharp suits, drink vodka martinis, and have beautiful women throw themselves at me, a la James Bond. After I watched my first Bond movie, I was convinced of the awesome power of suits and vodka martinis. I knew I would be a good spy, because at age nine, my friend Eric Pratt and I snuck around the neighborhood on summer nights, trying to annoy all of our neighbors who were actually enemy spies. We didn't know who they were spying for, only that they were enemy spies. As we saw it, it was our patriotic duty to thwart these ne'er-do-wells from their villainy. (That was also our battle cry.) We were pretty good at it too. We snuck around from backyard to backyard, and not once did we ever get caught. Oh sure, the occasional dog would bark at us, but that's to be expected when they're highly trained enemy attack dogs. Those Scottish Terriers can be extremely vicious. Eric's and my spying efforts were based on the ability to ring people's doorbells and run away without getting caught. We got good enough at it that we could do 15 doorbells in a single night. We had a few close calls, like the people who answered their door too quickly, or the people we rang three times in a row. But other than that, we were careful planners who plotted our escape routes and meeting points before each ring. We eventually had to stop after the parents of one of our so-called "friends" ratted us out after we hit his house one night when he couldn't go out with us. But my dreams of being a spy never died. When I was 13 years old, I got a book about spies. It was a behind-the-scenes look at what spies did and how they were recruited. There was even a test that I could take to see if I had the temperament to be a spy. I figured out that by answering ‘C’ to all the questions, I would achieve the ideal score for a spy. And it only took me three tries to do it. The problem was, I didn't know who to tell about my test score or that it showed that I was qualified to drive cool cars and sleep with beautiful women. So I thought about writing a letter. "Dear CIA, I took a test in the ‘Handbook for Spies’ book recently. I'm sure you're familiar with the book, since it was written by someone in your line of work. I achieved a score of 82 on the test, which said that I would make an ideal spy. Do you have an opening for any agents? If so, could you please tell me where to get my suits and car? Sincerely yours, [Name stricken for security purposes]". However, I decided against this approach, since an enemy spy might intercept my letter at the post office. That, and I didn't have the CIA's address. But I was undeterred. I continued reading James Bond books and watching his movies. I even bought a plastic gun that fired suction cup darts, because it looked like the kind of gun Bond carried. For hours, I practiced concealing it, pulling it out quickly, and making difficult shots in my room. The end result was that if I ever came face to face with an enemy spy who could be killed with a suction cup dart from six feet away, I had nothing to worry about. That all changed when I finally read a newspaper article about spies, and how James Bond basically over-glamorized the spy business: "It's not really like that", the article said. "It's all about sitting in windowless rooms, analyzing information. You never get to drive cool cars, and beautiful women don't throw themselves at you on a daily basis".    That article popped my dream of becoming a spy like a balloon on broken glass. I was adrift, without any motivation or long-term goals for weeks. But soon, I was embarked on a new career. One of glamour, intrigue, and even more beautiful women. Thanks to the TV show, "Magnum P. I.", I had a new goal in life. "Dear Private Eye Agency, I would like to be a private investigator. I am very good at gathering secrets, and I already know how to shoot a plastic Walther PPK. In the 18th century, the Outer Banks were home base to Blackbeard the pirate.        Today the islands are filled with tourists and hotels and cottages. But in 1903, Kitty Hawk was an empty sandy beach, with a few fishermen and a lifeboat station where men stood by to aid shipwrecks. Kill Devil Hill, which is just a big sand dune, was a good place to test an airpiane. On that windy December day, Orville won the toss of a coin. He got to fly first, lying flat on his stomach on the wing of the kite-like biplane. Wilbur ran beside him; the plane lifted a few feet above the sand and stayed in the air for 17 seconds. The brothers took turns and flew four flights that day. The longest lasted 59 seconds. It was enough. They had flown. The men from the lifeboat station had seen them and taken a picture. The headlines in the morning newspaper in nearby Norfolk, Virginia — the Virginian Pilot — told of the flight, although most of the details in the story were wrong. The brothers were upset about the poor reporting, but it didn't much matter: no one paid attention, and other newspapers didn't carry the story. No one understood that birds now had competition: people would soon be flying. Orville and Wilbur went home to Dayton and set to work. They knew they could fly, but they also knew their plane needed improving. They flew around a big pasture in Ohio. Neighbors saw them and talked about the flights. In 1904 a group of newspaper reporters came to see for themselves. Now, the Wright brothers were not daredevils. They were very methodical and precise. They did everything as well as they could. They checked and tested and checked and tested again, each time they flew. That made sense. When the reporters arrived, the brothers were having mechanical problems with the plane. The reporters stayed two days. The Wright brothers wouldn't fly on those days; the plane wasn't ready. The reporters left. Some wrote that the Wright brothers were fakes. One writer did stay and saw them fly. He was the editor of an apiary journal. An apiary is a place where bees are raised for their honey. Yes, you heard that right: the first long article about the Wright brothers' flight was in a beekeepers' magazine! In September of 1908, in Virginia, Orville showed Americans that people could fly. He lifted his plane into the air and swung around an army field one and a half times before he landed. The crowd of watchers rushed forward "screaming as loudly as they could, overwhelmed by the miracle that had taken place before their eyes". Try to imagine that scene in 1908. For thousands and thousands of years, men and women looked at birds and dreamed that they too could lift themselves into the air. Some tried. Mythical Icarus, back in ancient days, took birds' feathers and a frame and made something like a hang glider. Others, who we know were real, had built gliders, or hot-air balloons that floated on the wind. What the Wrights did was different. They didn't depend on the wind. They used their intelligence to build a machine that conquered the skies. They solved the problem of flight. I’ve lived in Denmark now for nearly four years, and I’ve changed a lot within this time. I’ve become more fashionable, more cosmopolitan-minded, more …Danish – if I’m allowed to say that.

But one thing hasn’t changed about me. And that is my inability to cooperate with or understand Danish supermarket culture. As someone who was raised predominantly in the United States, I’ve always been used to grocery stores with a selection of food choices so huge that it’s almost perverted. That and a high level of service. In an American grocery store, one can find a kind of product with a thousand different brandings and types. For example, let’s take the flakes varieties: whole grain frosted flakes, or fat-free frosted flakes. Do I want my cream cheese with low, medium, or full fat? Seedless watermelons or watermelons with seeds? That being said, when I walk into a Danish grocery store I want to burst into tears because I’m so bored with the selection. The variety of cereals consists of Cherrios, Honey- nut Cherrios, and Wheaties. Coco-puffs if I’m lucky. There’re few fruits and vegetables, most rotten. I’m telling you, everything is so boring and plain and demanding of hard kitchen labour that you just wish some American food companies could establish factories here and import some ready made dinners.

I know I should be ashamed of saying this, but I do miss American convenience. In Denmark, making a homemade meal requires at least 30 dollars spent at the grocery store and 2 hours in the kitchen. For instance, at my local grocery store, nothing is allowed to be under 4 dollars. That’s right, it’s called organic and healthy food, free of anything synthetic or “fast”-related. But I do miss synthetic food.

Oh yes, the whole Danish, “do-it-yourself” attitude prevails! Expect to stress while bagging all of your food, as no one will do it for you.

The only way to really understand what I mean is to imagine that if you’ve come from America and you’re used to certain things with service and product selection and then you move here – it truly is different in Denmark. And I’ve lived elsewhere in Europe (Iceland, England, Spain) and I still find the grocery stores much better and with more selection in those countries.

However, how could anyone take me serious when I say, “I miss synthetic food”? That is purely attempting to be sarcastic, and I see that it is wrong and disgusting that American food is pumped up with so much crap. I really appreciate that in Denmark the food is free of everything artificial and it shows on Danes – most of them look healthy and fit here. But once in a while I miss the vastness of an American grocery store!

I want to add that I am Danish, was born in Denmark, lived here for 5 years as a child and then moved to America where I lived most of my life. I moved back here a few years ago and I love the country. I speak Danish. I’m not an immigrant in Denmark who is unsatisfied with the way of life here and who should move back to the States. I’m a student and of course it takes 2 hours to make a meal on my own.

Today, all kinds of scientists work together to uncover the secrets of the past. One of the most amazing new techniques which is being used has discovered hidden pyramids in Egypt. We are all familiar with the three most famous pyramids at Giza, but there could be many more hidden beneath the sands of the desert. A satellite survey has recently found more than 1000 towns and 3000 ancient settlements as well as the pyramids. Images are sent back from a satellite 700 km above the Earth. The satellite is equipped with extremely powerful cameras, which are able to find objects less than one metre in diameter on Earth. Infra-red imaging is then used to show different materials hidden beneath the surface of the land. In Egypt this works very well because the Ancient Egyptians built their homes from mud bricks, which are much denser than the soil around them, so they show up clearly in these images. Although the experts were unsure at first if this new technology would really work, some archaeological digs have taken place and found exactly what has been shown on the images. Scientists are now convinced that this technology will have an amazing effect on archaeology.
